Mullintrate 1 (with poor house and grounds)
|Boyle & Deery|
This was a general design for many of the poor houses in various locations in Ireland. It was designed by an Englishman called George Wilkinson. His initial job was to select various suitable sites to accommodate the building and of course to have available ground for a graveyard. The overall appearances of these types of buildings were cold and uninviting.
The poor people had no alternative but to be housed in these atrocities of workmanship but as the dreaded famine entered the scene there was no alternative left only to request being cared for in these dungeons of life. The buildings may have saved lives but at what a cost.
