The following is a list of girls’ names which I also found some years ago on a number of fragmented pages from a Pupils’ Roll Book or Register. The original pages are included in the collection.
There is nothing unusual about the list, except that the attendance record dates from May 1830 to February 1833.

These few torn pages, which I discovered in the old house in Lifford, Co. Donegal seem to reflect a type of educational system operational during that time period. It was apparent immediately that it was a school for girls with the school location remaining uncertain but several indications point towards Murlog National School during the initial years.
The fact that the pages were found in the house might suggest that the school was based there but once again, just conjecture.
A former resident of the town stated that the original school was near to the old Murlog Church entrance before it was rebuilt across the road, where it stands today.

The pages of the register reveal that each pupil was marked present with a single dot (.) whereas each absence was left as a blank. However, if a pupil was sick then the word “sick” was inserted opposite the pupil’s name with the remaining absent days or dates omitted.

Remarkably, most of the female names survived and are, by using a magnifying glass, mostly identifiable. Months, with specific dates, appear just barely legible on the original copies. On the page dated 1832 an “inspection day” was recorded. Unfortunately, the names and details of those inspecting are missing including the teacher’s name.

Each pupil had a registration number ranging from 1 to 93. Supposedly, this indicated a total registration of 93 names based on the limited information on the pages. It is extremely likely that there were more pupils in attendance which raises the query of the number of groups being taught and how age division was organised. Although some names appear to be repeated, it does not follow that it is the same pupil.

The Roll Pages show clearly that this school was open 6 days each week, closing on Sunday.
I tried with difficulty to identify the school but only the Ordnance Survey Memoirs pointed some clues towards Murlog or Murlagh (There are variant spellings).
Perhaps it was a private school or government controlled?
Based on some of the information from the Ordnance Survey it is likely that all the girls on the old register pages, may have attended Murlog Old School in the period 1830-1833.
Perhaps there are other clues unsolved within the registered names.
